Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Montessori School of Baton Rouge stands as one of the region’s longest-running Montessori schools in Louisiana. Founded in 1966, the school began with a courageous group of women who, inspired by a growing national interest in the Montessori method, launched a simple book study to discuss the method. With no internet and few resources available, they dove into research, secured funding from the local Catholic diocese, and located their first teacher, Vera Kramer, in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Kramer was trained directly under Dr. Maria Montessori and traveled to Baton Rouge to be a part of the school’s opening. Together, their vision has shaped thousands of children over six decades.
Today, Montessori School of Baton Rouge continues to honor the legacy with an unwavering commitment to an authentic Montessori education for children ages 18 months through kindergarten. The Montessori approach is internationally recognized and implemented, allowing families to move across states while children continue their education seamlessly. Parents choose the school for its rich culture and diversity. Classrooms feature mixed-age groupings for ages three to six, allowing children to learn naturally from peers while developing independence and confidence. Highly-trained, MACTE-credentialed teachers guide students using Montessori materials designed to spark curiosity, deepen concentration, and support hands-on learning. Each morning includes an extended three-hour work cycle, offering children uninterrupted time to explore their interests and develop mastery at their own pace.
As an approved, accredited non-public school through BESE and the Louisiana Department of Education, Montessori School of Baton Rouge provides true early childhood education while also supporting the needs of working families. Generations of alumni now return with their own children, drawn by the method’s proven benefits. Modern research continues to affirm what Dr. Montessori observed over a century ago: When implemented with fidelity, the Montessori approach fosters creativity, academic growth, and lifelong problem-solving.
Rooted in history, Montessori School of Baton Rouge remains dedicated to joyful learning and peaceful classrooms, just as its founders envisioned 60 years ago. To learn more, visit montessoribr.org/welcome.
